What is solar
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roofs of homes and businesses use energy from the sun to generate electricity cleanly and quietly. The conversion of sunlight into electricity takes place in cells of specially fabricated semiconductor crystals. Solar doesn’t generate electricity all the time, but it does generate electricity when it is needed most – during the day and during hot sunny periods when the demand for power is at its peak.
Another bonus of small-scale solar is that it generates electricity at the point of demand (i.e. where people live and work). That means there is no need to transfer energy over long distances using expensive electrical infrastructure.
Australia is one of the sunniest continents in the world. There is a large potential for solar PV to make a significant contribution to electricity generation in Australia over the coming years. There are many different steps Australians can take to reduce their electricity use and, in turn, their power bills and one of the largest is to install a solar PV system.
Why install a solar system
The main and best reason to install a solar system is to reduce your power bills and possibly eliminate them altogether.
The price of solar power systems have dropped dramatically over recent years, while electricity prices have increased significantly and likely to continue to do so. With a solar system, you can generate electricity at a lower cost than purchasing from your local utility by harvesting the power of the sun!
If you are paying more than 25c/kWh for your daytime electricity usage, a system sized to your daytime load will provide a payback time of between 5 and 7 years after which time, the electricity you generate is essentially free.
With solar panels having a serviceable life of decades, going solar translates to a huge reduction in your medium to long term power costs and can even generate revenue by selling power back to the grid. A solar system also increases the value of your property and by generating essentially free energy from the sun, it helps reduce the amount of greenhouse gases at a coal or gas fired power plant.
